Sneak Peek Post

Here's your one and only sneak peak until the final photo shoot. Some of you might have seen the other dozen or so detail pics I had up earlier today as a "one day preview post". I announced it on FaceBook this AM, so be sure to be following me on there too! I will not be posting any further photos until then. Trust me...the reveal is gonna knock yer darn socks off!

mallard Cowboy Float Progress Update

I've made some progress on the saddle and bridle. Work will slow a bit in the coming two-weeks as I need to prepare for the start of the Spring Semester. Still lots to do on this piece, but I'm happy with how it's going thus far.

Mallard Cowboy Float Progress Update

So after the big opening, I had a little time yesterday in the studio to get some painting done on the mallard. Note, the orange of the saddle and straps is not final, it is just the underpainting. But for the most part, the rest of him is done.

AIB @ LU MFA Alumni Show January 2011

So had to take a little hiatus from the studio. Installed the MFA Show and had a super rad opening, over 350 people! A huge success!!! Look me up on FaceBook to see all the pics!

Mallard Cowboy Color Comps

So after popping this into Painter and doing some comps, I've decided to go with the dirty orange (darker of the two). I feel it best compliments the green of the duck and the blue of the Cowboy. Additionally I think it will really pop once embellished. Thanks for looking!

Mallard Cowboy Pull Float Painting Update

So the plan for today is to drop the mallard into Corel Painter and do some color comps, see kids, I do color comps too! I've never painted a mallard before, aside from the 1982 one, but lets not really count that. Anyway, I figured I'd shoot it alone as well as with the Cowboy and we'll see how it goes. I'll post some color comps too so you all can see that process as well.

I did a rough guess on hours spent thus far and I'm going to try to be on top of this from now on. But I figure this project has 32-35 hours so far. Lots still to do. The Cowboy is almost there. He needs his yolk, cuffs and boots to have painted scenes (not sure about those yet) then glitter, scarf, boots and gun rig (belt/holster) are going to be glittered white. I may add bullets to the belt. He's going to have fringe all along the piping, the requisite tin can hands, spurs, and a tiny gold chain with two jump rings to attach the removable gun. And I may work more on the face as well. And finally on him, I am going to paint over the current wooly chaps, then re-glue on another fluffy layer of sawdust. Once all of that is complete, it will all get a coat of spray fix.

The mallard on the other had, well yeah...clearly that needs a lot of work.

And in case you've not figured it out by now, this is going to be a pull toy mounted on a board, kind of like a mini Tournament of Roses Parade Float!!

Stay tuned, I'll keep y'all posted! Thanks for looking!

Mallard Cowboy Float Progress Update

Got further yesterday than planned! Got both the mallard and the Cowboy gessoed and the Cowboy as you can see has got some of his base color. My school work is done and now I'm off and running for the day. I suspect to make big strides today. Stay tuned and thanks for looking!

Mallard Cowboy Float Progress Update

Progress has been made! Finished the paper mache on the Cowboy last night before bed, so he's all dried up this AM and ready to go. Got school work to do today, but later today that mallard and I got us a date. If all goes to plan, I'll be able to begin painting tomorrow!
